Equal Opportunities
Compliance with Employment Laws
Private employers, local and state authorities, educational institutions, employment agencies, and labor organizations are subject to federal laws protecting job applicants and employees from discrimination based on the following grounds:
EQUAL EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, protects job applicants and employees from discrimination in hiring, promotion, termination, compensation, benefits, training, job classification, referrals, and other employment aspects due to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), or national origin. Religious discrimination includes failure to provide reasonable accommodations for an employee's religious practices unless doing so would impose an undue hardship.
DISABILITY
Title I and Title V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended, protect qualified individuals from discrimination based on disability in hiring, promotion, termination, compensation, benefits, training, job classification, referrals, and other terms and conditions of employment. Disability discrimination includes the failure to provide reasonable accommodations for the known physical or mental limitations of a qualified individual with a disability, unless doing so would impose an undue hardship.
AGE
The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, as amended, protects job applicants and employees aged 40 and older from discrimination in hiring, promotion, termination, compensation, benefits, training, job classification, referrals, and other terms and conditions of employment.
SEX (WAGES)
In addition to the prohibition of sex discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Equal Pay Act of 1963, as amended, prohibits wage discrimination based on sex between men and women performing substantially similar work in jobs requiring equal skill, effort, and responsibility under similar working conditions within the same establishment.
GENETICS
Title II of the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act of 2008 (GINA) protects job applicants and employees from discrimination based on genetic information in hiring, promotion, termination, compensation, benefits, training, job classification, referrals, and other terms and conditions of employment. GINA also prohibits employers from requesting, acquiring, or disclosing genetic information except as strictly allowed by law. Genetic information includes information about genetic tests of applicants, employees, or their family members; the manifestation of diseases or disorders in family members (family medical history); and requests for or receipt of genetic services by applicants, employees, or their family members.
RETALIATION
All federal laws prohibit covered entities from retaliating against individuals who file a discrimination charge, participate in discrimination proceedings, or oppose unlawful employment practices.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU BELIEVE DISCRIMINATION OCCURRED
There are strict time limits for filing employment discrimination charges. To preserve the EEOC’s ability to act on your behalf and protect your right to file a private lawsuit if needed, you should contact the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) promptly if you suspect discrimination:

Employment Eligibility Verification (Form I-9)
If you are selected to join La Colonia Medical Center, Inc. and its subsidiaries, you will be required to complete Form I-9, as mandated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Form I-9 is used to verify the identity and employment authorization of all individuals hired to work in the United States.
All employees and employers (or authorized representatives) must complete the form. Employees must attest to their employment authorization and provide acceptable documents to verify identity and eligibility. Employers must examine the documents to ensure they are genuine and relate to the employee, recording this information on Form I-9. A list of acceptable documents is included on the form’s last page.
Employers must retain Form I-9 for the required period and make it available for inspection by authorized government officials. Note: State agencies and certain agricultural recruiters or referrers may also be required to use Form I-9.
