The Spanish Colony
The name “La Colonia” comes from a famous hospital in Sagua La Grande, Cuba, built in the late 1800s. By the mid-1900s, that hospital provided high-quality medical care to working families for an affordable monthly fee. It offered everything from doctor visits and lab tests to surgeries and advanced X-rays.
As a doctor proud of his roots, Jorge Acevedo always dreamed of opening his own clinic. He chose the name La Colonia to honor that iconic healthcare center from his hometown.
Jorge Acevedo
Our founder and president, Dr. Jorge Acevedo, was born in Sagua La Grande, Cuba. He moved to Miami at age 27 after earning his medical degree. He started his career working with seniors at a local healthcare center. Right then, he decided to change how geriatric care works in South Florida by bringing new, helpful services to older adults.
Dr. Acevedo values simplicity, family, and a deep love for his roots. Today, he still gives that same personal affection and dedication to our patients and employees—the members of this great family who inspire us every day.
La Casita
It all started in a small, cozy house—affectionately called "La Casita"—right where our main facility stands today in Hialeah.
To keep caring for our patients while building a modern wellness center, we temporarily moved services to eastern Hialeah. In 2011, we opened our first official facility on that very same spot, locking in our identity as a true community home.
