Urinary health also requires specialized care

Urological health is crucial to the overall quality of life of older adults. The urinary tract is the body’s drainage system responsible for eliminating urine, which is composed of toxins and excess fluids. For normal urination to occur, all parts of the urinary tract must work together in the correct order.

The good news is that our patients have access to Urology specialists, a medical discipline dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the urinary system in both men and women.

We advise you not to delay a visit to your primary care physician. Discuss your symptoms with them so that a specialist can properly evaluate you. Please understand that as we age, the risk of kidney and bladder problems increases, including urinary incontinence, benign prostatic hyperplasia, kidney stones, and sexual dysfunction, among others.

The urologist will help you understand age-related changes that may affect genitourinary health, such as:

  • The bladder wall becoming stiff
  • Weakening of the bladder muscles, which may obstruct the urethra
  • Enlargement of the prostate gland in men
  • Vaginal prolapse in women, which can cause involuntary urine leakage

At our medical centers, we perform laboratory and imaging tests, including urinalysis, X-rays, and examinations of the bladder wall using an instrument called a cystoscope.

  • Urinalysis
  • Urine culture
  • Blood tests
  • Cystoscopy

Urologists also perform surgical procedures, such as lithotripsy to break up kidney stones or prostatectomy to treat prostate cancer.
